THE ORANGE BLOSSOM
"There was once a man so absorbed by the duties entrusted to him at court that his wife, weary of never seeing him, resolved to leave and move to another province with a man who claimed to love her truly. Some time later, the first man was appointed as an envoy to Usa, and as he set out to assume the post, he learned that his former wife was now married to one of the officials tasked with hosting him during the journey.
Upon arriving at that household, he demanded that the lady herself serve him, declaring that otherwise he would drink nothing. When the woman appeared to offer him a cup of sake, he picked up an orange blossom placed on one of the accompanying dishes and recited:
This fragrance the orange blossom gives
in the fifth month
brings back to mind
beloved sleeves
I once held dear.
The woman instantly recognised who he was. Not long after, she abandoned her life and withdrew to the mountains."
