THE WHITE CHRYSANTHEMUM

"There was a naïve young lady who fancied herself refined. Being fond of composing poetry, she resolved to hint at her feelings for a gentleman who lived nearby. She did so by plucking a white chrysanthemum, its few petals tinged red by the chill, and sending it to him with the following verse:

Where does the crimson hue take refuge?
For to my eyes, there is naught but falling snow
that nearly buries the branch.

The gentleman, feigning ignorance of her true intent, replied:

The chrysanthemum, white-petalled, conceals its red—
just as your sleeve’s reflection:
a red lining beneath a snow-coloured robe."
