THE FIREFLIES
"There was once a young woman, raised with great refinement, who fell in love and wondered how she might express her feelings to the man she loved. In the end, it seems her longing turned into illness, and before she died, she confessed her love. Her father, weeping bitterly, sent for the man.
He came as swiftly as he could, but by the time he arrived, the young woman had already passed away. Grief-stricken, he remained for the funeral. It was late in the sixth month, and the heat was oppressive. At dusk, music was played to console her spirit, and when night fell, a cool breeze began to blow. Then came the fireflies. As he lay watching them, the man recited:
If you can pass beyond the clouds,
O gentle fireflies,
tell the wild goose
that autumn is already on its way.
And after a long day awaiting
the setting of the cruel summer sun,
a sadness overwhelms me—
though I know not why."
